201 - 300 HOLY SPIRIT William Bathurst

264 – O for That Flame of Living Fire

1
O for that flame of living fire
Which shone so bright in saints of old;
Which bade their souls to heaven aspire,
Calm in distress, in danger bold!

2
Where is that spirit, Lord, which dwelt
In Abram’s breast, and sealed Him Thine?
Which made Paul’s heart with sorrow melt,
And glow with energy divine?

3
That spirit which from age to age
Proclaimed Thy love, and taught Thy ways?
Brightened Isaiah’s vivid page,
And breathed in David’s hallowed lays?

4
Is not Thy grace as mighty now
As when Elijah felt its power?
When glory beamed from Moses’ brow,
Or Job endured the trying hour?

5
Remember, Lord, the ancient days;
Renew Thy work, Thy grace restore;
And while to Thee our hearts we raise,
On us Thy Holy Spirit pour.

Great Spiritual Song by William H. Bathurst who was born in August 28,1796, at Clevedale, Mangotsfield, near Bristol, U.K. His father was a Member of Parliament for Bristol. William graduated with a B.A. from Oxford University in 1818. He died on November 25,1877 after writing over 200 wonderful hymns of praise.

I love this hymn
Let’s give our hearts to God so the holy spirit will be poured on us to do His work as our ancient brothers mentioned in the song.

In 1993, I was attending Weimar College as a fairly new Adventist. First week there, I woke up around 4:30 a.m. to a voice singing this song in our lounge room. I went into the room to hear more. This faithful brother who was singing this was from the continent of Africa and we began meeting every morning to have worship together (praying for an outpouring of His spirit upon us and His church). I am so thankful that the Lord used him to strengthen my walk. This song since then, has been one of my all time favorites. Such a beautiful prayer message put to music!
